Frequently Asked Questions

What a league costs, what skill level you need, how seasons and scoring work, and how to try a match first.

Joining

What is Mahj Muddle?

Mahj Muddle runs American mahjong leagues in cities across the country. Each league is organized by a local admin, and players meet at homes, restaurants and community spaces to play scheduled matches through a season.

Is there a league near me?

See the list of cities on our Find a league page. If there isn't one near you yet, you can start one: we provide everything you need to run it.

How much does it cost?

Each league sets its own season fee, shown on its page. You pay once per season, online and securely through Stripe. Some leagues also offer discount codes.

Can I try it before I join?

Many leagues offer a TryIt pass, which lets you play one match before you sign up for a full season. Ask your league admin or look for the TryIt option on the league's page.

What if I join partway through a season?

You can join any time registration is open. From the third week of a season, we'll show you how many weeks are left before you pay, so you can choose to join now or be emailed when the next season opens.

Playing

Do I need to be an experienced player?

No, but you should know the basic rules and be able to play a full game. Leagues welcome all levels, and you choose your level when you sign up so matches stay comfortable. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide.

What should I bring?

Your current National Mahjong League card. The match host provides the table, tiles and racks unless they say otherwise.

How do matches work?

Any member can propose a match: a date, time and place. Other members join until there are four players. You'll get a confirmation and a reminder the evening before.

What are Modern, Party, Traditional and Power?

They are match styles, so everyone at the table knows what to expect. Modern and Party are played with blanks; Traditional and Power without. Party is the most social, Power the fastest and most competitive, and Modern and Traditional sit in between.

What if I can't make it to a match?

Withdraw from the match in the app as early as you can, so someone else can take your seat.

Seasons and scoring

How long is a season?

Seasons run eight weeks. Your league page shows the current season's dates.

How does scoring work?

Players enter the score of each game after a match. Your best results each week count toward your standing on the league leaderboard, and you earn bonus points for proposing matches and for playing with different people.

What happens at the end of a season?

The final standings are posted, and every player receives a personal summary of their season by email.

What if a season doesn't get enough players?

If a season doesn't reach its minimum number of players by its start date, it doesn't begin and everyone who paid is refunded.

Your account

Can I choose which emails I get?

Yes. On your profile you can turn match emails (confirmations and reminders) and messages from your league admin on or off separately.

Can I get notifications on my phone?

Yes. Install Mahj Muddle on your phone's home screen and turn on notifications from your profile. On iPhone, install it from Safari first.

The best way to learn is to sit down at a table.
